The Olive Branch

March 3, 2007

Last night my friend called.  Well, his roommate.  This is a good thing.  There’s been a lot of not-speaking going on, and we’ve been friends a long time.

So.  The whole tribe (there are three of us humans in the house, but that was how it was stated) the whole tribe was invited to a turkey dinner today.  Again, good news.  Sort of.

Here’s the thing.  Bly and I are/were exhausted.  We had carefully planned and worked and grocery shopped on a Friday night, all to have the entire weekend free to do nothing but recover some sanity.

Three stress-filled hours of everyone on their best behavior while we try to mend five months of neglected and abused fences?  NOT what we wanted to do this weekend.  But–how to turn it down, without burning bridges forever?  This friend is pretty much guaranteed to take it that way.  Damned extroverts.  Avoid them along with the rest of the world and they’re sure to take it personally…

That said–we survived.  They survived.  No one but the turkey felt the slice of the carving knife, and closing time at the library (Hope had a book on hold) got us out of there before anything worse happened.

*whew*  Let’s not do that again soon.
