More Firefly tonight, and that equals more love. We’re on the second DVD now. I hate it, because there are only four! I’m completely blown away by how well-drawn the characters are. Each adventure builds them a little more, as it should be. As it is not done in so many other shows. In every episode, the crew of the Serenity are surprising and yet completely in keeping with what we’ve seen before. Zoe’s deadpan humor, Mal’s reluctant decency, Kaylee’s resourceful innocence–and don’t even get me started on Jayne. Oh, my, yes. Jayne. I adore Adam Baldwin’s character, Jayne Cobb. Clearly, the man was born to play a gun-toting psycho with a magnificently twisted sense of humor. Of course, my enjoyment of him may reveal a little twist in my own psyche… I can’t wait to see more. Especially as it’s been revealed that the Shepherd (think ‘priest,’ no sheep have turned up yet, though we did have cows last–ahem.) The Shepherd has a secret. Oooh…

In the tradition of Star Trek–great show, cancel it! That, and the fact it takes place in space, is about all this show has in common with ST, however. And I love it. The characters are delightful, the plot is twisty and fun, the universe is deep and engaging… I walked past this in Best Buy. Walked back and grabbed it, never having seen an episode. It was meant to be. I can’t even articulate how much I love this show. They swear in Chinese. Seriously. Because the world they live in has a history, and in it Chinese and American culture got shoved together. Cool, ne? No, I haven’t watched it all yet. But I’m looking forward to it. For those not willing to drop $40 (hey, it was my tax refund splurge before I went back to ‘sensible’) on a show you haven’t seen, you can buy a few (or all, I think) of the episodes for download from Amazon. How cool is that? Definitely recommended. And in case you’re wondering why all my reviews are good–it’s because if I don’t like it, I don’t waste my time on it.
